- Welcome to C&C
We are Andrea and Tawny, friends who met on The North Shore of Hawaii that share the same story. We’re both moms to discerning youngins, ‘nuff said. We have ravenous husbands with no limits to what they’ll ingest. Add to that our own food sensitivities (gluten & dairy) and we have a challenge in front of us. To expand our abilities in the kitchen we studied with a diverse group of women –ranging from the South Pacific to Europe– where we shared meals & methods from their homelands. Recently we’ve been pulled apart by our husbands’ masters degrees, having to leave Hawaii for Oregon and France, but this blog keeps us connected! We love to share, most especially food, so please enjoy the spectacle as we document our travels and recreate recipes: some from our childhoods, some Hawaiian fare, and many from far far away!

Gateau au Chocolat Fondant de Nathalie aka BEST Chocolate Cake EVER
Bio- K Plus- Do You Think About Probiotics?
I wanted to take the time and share with you something that my brother shared with me regarding a health product that he is loving-Bio-K Plus: a probiotic supplement.
I was talking to my brother the other day and he was sharing with me one of his many ‘discoveries’, which improve his life. He is all about finding what works, researching beyond a normal state of research to know what is good and bad for his body. This benefits me because basically he spends the time researching while I reap from the benefits of him telling me what to do and what not to do. Click here to Read More
OFF to Frrrrrance! Pear Spinach and Goat Cheese Salad
Well, we are at the airport getting ready to board! Our new life is about to begin! Tama is so excited he could hardly sleep last night and waking up this morning it was the first thing on his mind! He has been such a sport and he the best traveler I could possible wish for! I guess we have talked up going to France, and going to school, and how there is soccer there and trains and really good ice cream and what not for the past 5 months that he is beyond excited! Hopefully it meets his expectations because I can hardly imagine what he has pictured in his little head
. He does know that his birthday is there and Halloween will happen too so I guess that along with some ice cream is enough to please a kid!
Anyway, we can hardly believe that everything has finally worked out! Nothing…. and I mean pretty much nothing has worked out how we imagined but it has all worked out and probably in the end better than we could have planned. What lays ahead is a mystery but we have traded in our shorts, and t’s for boots and jackets so we are at least that prepared, ha! Click here to Read More
Tomato Basil Feta Salad
Well, we are now in Utah, spending a week here with my family for my little brothers wedding! We are way up in the mountains and there is hardly anyone up here and it feels amazing! Such a contrast from being in San Francisco for the past couple of days- which was constantly crazy.
Long story short, I went to San Francisco, by myself, for mine and Tamas French Visa three days ago and ended up getting stuck there for two days! I was suppose to fly in and out on the same day (back to Canada where Tama and Shem are) but when I went to the airport they would not let me board without my passport (the French Consulate takes your passport and then mails it back with the visa stamped in). So I get to the airport and they said there is no way I can fly home, even though I had all sort of other ID. Being a little pregnant emotional girl, I started crying and everything…and they still wouldn’t let me! Uhgg, so gut wrenching and stressful! Click here to Read More
Vanilla Roasted Honey Pears
Vanilla Roasted Honey Pears….. mmmmm… good discovery! Light, simple, good by itself or paired with ice cream (in our case-rice dream) or yogurt! My mom got this recipe from her friend who has a really neat blog called Cher Stuff http://www.cherilitchfield.blogspot.ca/. These were good warm out of the oven and even good cold the next day mixed into my yogurt!
It has been fun being at my parents because they have many food sensitivities too, so its like we are on the same team in the kitchen! My hubby is flying in today so we are going to have to make things a little more hearty from now on! haha. I remember the first time he came to my parents he discovered it was a good idea to eat a meal before our supper at the house! We would go get some fast food before dinner Haha. It is true, if you are not use to clean, simple foods they do not seem satisfying at all. I have experienced the same thing! Click here to Read More
Power Packed Pops aka Sneaky Kale Popsicles -Kid Approved!
Well, are you curious to what people are cooking up in the great mother land up North? Yep, I’m here in Canada and loving every minute of it. We will be here for the a little while before we make our way to France where we will start our new chapter! Besides reconnecting with my family, I think the best thing about being here so far has been sleeping in a bed! Oh my gosh, I knew it would be better than an air mattress, but my oh my it’s completely glorious. I almost want to recommend sleeping on an air mattress for a couple of months just so you have a new found love and appreciation for your bed. The first night, we a solid 15 years, the next 13, the next 12, and been averaging 10 hours ever since. Back home in Hawaii I was sleeping a broken up sleep of 6 or 7 hours. I have a new philosophy…you spend half of your life in your bed, make it a good experience- invest in a good bed and nice bedroom! Not only do you spend half of your life in your bed but that time effects the time you are out of your bed. Bad bed equals back aches, poor quality of sleep, drowsiness in the day, an unsharp mind etc etc. Good bed equals a better quality of life- I am convinced! Or maybe I am just getting old and whimpy…what do you think? Click here to Read More
Sweet’n Tangy Broccoli Salad
Broccoli Salad is pretty amazing. The first time I tried it, I started downing it like I would apple crisp- plate after plate. But hey it’s healthy, so the more the better right! Not even close. It was a bacon, cheese, mayo masterpiece. I knew it was just a tad too good to be healthy. Trying to up my health game lately, seeing how I spent a good solid month with a staple diet of Salt’n Vinegar Potato Chips, I knew I needed to make some changes.
Pregnancy got woozy and crazy and I seriously went a full month where all I could handle was Salt’n Vinegar chips. Thank goodness things are normal now and I can make some wiser choices! OH, and oh my gosh, I just found out… we are having a BOY!! We are beyond excited and we saw the ultra sound and he wasn’t a potato chip… which I was kind of worried about! It looks like all my intuition about having a little girl was completely off! What do I know… but hey we are beyond excited and feel so very blessed. Click here to Read More
Turkish Spinach Yogurt Dip
This is a great fresh dip that is so healthy and full of all sorts of nutrients. Not only is it healthy, but it is so tasty! This Turkish Spinach Dip is traditionally known as cacik. The base is yogurt (Greek yogurt works beautifully because of its thick creaminess) and mixture of garlic, spinach and a fresh herb symphony of dill, mint and parsley.
I love spinach dip but if I eat more than a pinch I am in trouble! I immediately feel a stomach ache coming on from all the cheese, and so to discover this awesome healthy version of a spinach dip is quite a treat! I could eat a full bowl of this without thinking twice! It is so good and you can feel good about eating it too!
This is good as a dip for vegetables, pita bread, chips or used as a spread for sandwiches or pitas! Click here to Read More
Lemon Pepper Pan Seared Salmon
Lemon Pepper Salmon is one of my favorites! It is simple , quick and delicious. I am a big believer in letting the flavor of a good ingredient, like fresh salmon, shine. When you have a good piece of fish or meat, it isn’t necessary to use bold seasonings. It is better to enhance the natural flavors by simply adding a few seasonings which compliment instead of mask the fish or meat.
This made for a very nutritious and substantial lunch! Tama is a big fish fan, so this is a family favorite in our house! This recipe can be used time and time again! Click here to Read More
‘One Love Surf Shop aka Kava Roots’ Acai Bowl Smoothie Shack Review
It was a bit overcast in Hawaii today, which made for a more ‘subdued blah’ feeling in the atmosphere. Do you remember the books, “The Bernstein Bears?” Do you remember when Papa Bear warns Brother and Sister Bear it is going to rain and they ask, “how do you know its going to rain Papa Bear?” and he says, “Oh children, I can feel it in my bones”. As a child, I remember being so confused at that reply Papa Bear gave his children, but now as I age, I swear, I am starting to possess those same powers. You can really feel the weather, and it can even affect your mood. Maybe as you age you become more in tune with your body or more one with nature and when the weather is blah it can make you blah too… trust me, I know all about the winter blues from growing up in the ‘Mother Land’ way up North in Regina Saskatchewan where winters can take up more than half the year… I totally get what weather can do to ones mood and I have a remedy that works without fail.
I don’t have all the answers, but if you ever feel down from the weather One Acai Bowl will do the trick every time. If you are in Hawaii you’re lucky, because you can find this treat on the North Shore all over the place! If you are not here, you can fix one up in your own blender and get very similar results! So turn that frown upside down and get an Acai Bowl in that belly. Click here to Read More
