Coconuts and Cardamom – Foods Infused with Passion and Love from All Around the Globe

Kahuku Grill-Where to Eat When Visiting Hawaii!

I guess it is time to let our little ‘family-ran, hole-in-the -wall, surfer joint restaurant’ shine. Ran by the 7 Brothers and their ma and pa along with the KG crew, this is a family ran, family friendly joint for all to come and feel welcome and get a taste of  Hawaii!

This is a video my awesome younger brother-in-law, Seek and his darling wifey, Bree made of the Grill! Arn’t they a talented duo? Check it out and get a taste of what the Kahuku Grill is all about.

Kahuku Grill, North Shore, Hawaii

Specializing in local fresh foods and oversized portions, making sure you get every bang for your buck helps make this a charming place on the North Shore to spend an afternoon or evening!

We’ve got specialty burgers with names like The Twice as Much, The Deep Blue, The Paneolo Burger, and The Bruce Irons to name a few. Only the freshest meat and ingredients are used everytime!

Oh and you can’t leave before trying the ultimate jumbo Coconut Macadamia Nut Shrimp with a Sweet and Sour Dipping sauce and the Home Style Cut Seasoned Fries…mmm to die for! Oh and I can’t forget my mother in laws Coconut Chocolate Chip Banana Bread with a Sweet Drizzle paired with ice cream, and more coconut and chocolate sauce drizzled all over makes for one scrumptious dessert! (Find the gluten free version recipe here)!

It is a fun place to eat and if you are on the Island you will have to put it on your to do list and come by and say hi!

I took the kids for a bike ride to the Grill for Lunch! Oh ya, I made them work for their food! That’s Tama, Teya (Tawny’s girl) and Sol (Tama’s cousin). They were such troopers!

Kahuku Grill North Shore Hawaii

You will always be greeted with a smile because when you are here, you are family!!

The Kahuku Grill is located on the historical site of an old sugar cane factory! There are still a lot of the pictures and parts of the machinery located around the property dating back to the late 1800′s.

You can also buy Raynor Surf Boards at the restaurant. Check out his site. All of the paintings are done by hand and Matty makes nothing but quality surf boards. It is all my family rides-along with everyone else around these parts. If you are looking for a board, look no further, because you can not get a better board for the price of these bad boys.

Check out how a surf board is made by Matty (Owner and creator of Raynor Surfboards).

and check out his blog here!

and his website right here!

This is Tama’s ultimate favorite shirt! I guess because his dad wears it every…single… day. He wants to be just like his daddy! You can pick up a Memorabilia T-shirt in your size by asking at the window!

Tama is a regular at the Grill these days! My hubby takes him a lot in the mornings while I lay in bed with my morning sickness- bless his heart! Tama has worked up to serving food and running errands. haha. He takes tips ;) just kidding!

The one and only BRUCE IRONS-one of the best surfers in the world, is seen here holding his own creation burger! Bruce is now a regular at the Grill and a sponsor! Check out those arms!!

The 7 Hannemann Brothers… even though they are more like sisters! They giggle more than laugh, they know Sound of Music, Moulin Rouge, My Fair Lady to name only a few…by heart- every song, most every scene, they could recite for you on the spot! And more than that, they are the nicest, most kind, thoughtful and sweet boys you will ever run across and anyone will second me on that. Never mind that they can cook! They are awesome, and I am lucky to have such great in-laws!  Mine is the good looking one in the middle ;) . The two ugly ones on the left aren’t married- if you want their phone numbers… just ask ;) ha ha.

Now, for the FOOOOOOD…… a little sneak peak of a few of the items.

Coconut Macadamia Nut Shrimp served with Rice and a Fresh Pupekea Salad topped with Cranberries, Wontons, Shredded Carrot, Purple Cabbage and drizzled with local Papaya Seed Dressing.

Hot Wings!

This is one of the specialty burgers! The name-The Shem Burger! So humble of my husband to name a burger after him self, right! oh and a glimpse of the home cut fries on the side…

Momma Peggy’s Coconut Macadamia Nut Banana Bread! My mother in law knows a thing or two about baking, and this is one of her golden nugget recipes. She makes each batch herself-everytime with tender love and care.Kahuku Grill's Banana Bread, North Shore, Hawaii

The Kahuku Grill is located three miles East of Turtle Bay Resort next top the Kahuku Gas Station.

I hope to see ya there some day!!

Aloha! Just wondering whether there were any gluten free items on the menu, and how the kitchen handles cross-contamination? I’m heading to the Big Island tomorrow and have struggled on Oahu and Maui with celiac disease safe eating. Mahalo!

Tessa! If you go to the Kahuku Grill, you can get a hamburger wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun if you ask. There are no breadcrumbs used in the meat. Also the salad is really nice, just ask to eliminate the wontons and the fish is gluten free. They are handling buns back there so 100% non contamination cannot be recommended. That is really tough when you have an allergy that serious huh?? Are there any places you like to go that you can recommend?? I hope this helped a little.

Jeni!! Hawaii misses you dearly! I have the same feeling I am going to feel the same way when we leave! I am starting to miss it thinking about it which I wasn’t really anticipating. There is something magical about Hawaii! Oh ya, I forgot Max had a crush on her!! She is such a doll! Hey you are getting ready to pop right?! That is so exciting!! I find out on Tuesday the the gender! Maybe I can have a girl for you? mwuwahaha. Maybe that wasn’t funny? haha love you jenni!

This is our weekly date night spot. Sometimes we try to mix it up and go for variety elsewhere, but it ends up feeling like a waste because nothing is as good in the are… and for Phil’s gargantuan appetite he actually gets full here without breaking our wallets!
